Brief

  • create a safe haven for the Queer Community– a place where they can come and relax, spend time and share experiences with other members of the community, and build a healing support system for each other.

  • the building should feel like a Wellness Retreat, while encouraging a sense of community and belonging.

The concept for Kaleidoscope is derived from Bubbles, since they can appear like floating rainbows. The LGBTQ+ community is almost always depicted through the use of rainbows and pride flags, which is why bubbles seem like a perfect fit.

The warm white ambient lighting helps create a warm, inviting and comfortable space for individuals seeking support and shelter. The colour scheme combines a monochromatic palette of white and the colours from the pride flag, balancing out bright colours with subtle materiality. Minimally textured eggshell walls paired with classic white oak herringbone flooring spans the whole space, making it appear larger. The central courtyard is divided into two parts, and it helps bring the monochrome and rainbows together, creating an oasis of vibrance. To bring in a sense of peace, one half of the courtyard has a large tree surrounded by a water feature that acts as a ‘tree of life’, with bubble-seating all around to invoke the feeling of togetherness while tying in with the concept. The other half of the courtyard has the elements of a campfire, with step seating mirrored on either side. The courtyard, therefore, acts as a social hub for people accessing the space.

Windows in cascading shades of rainbow are another key design element as they bring in more colour to the space, especially as natural light filters through with varying hues during the day. This creates a hopeful and serene environment.

Spaces for various kinds of therapy have been included, including pet therapy, group therapy, individual therapy and art therapy. These spaces have been designed and placed to receive a good amount of natural light to appear more warm, welcoming and safe. Vibrant colours are further highlighted by natural light, along with neutral colours of the floor and the walls.

Kaleidoscope was designed to act like a safe space providing support through spatial planning, and a sense of community.
